Farming in harmony with nature

Kass-Haff is run by Tom Kass and his wife Anja Staudenmayer according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture. The family, who live on the farm with their four children, therefore set high standards for both ecology and animal welfare; promoting closed nutrient cycles and respecting the characteristics of plants, animals and people. The farm’s agriculture is nature-friendly and in harmony with nature. No artificial fertilisers or pesticides are used. Kass-Haff also wants to play an important role in the local community and offers a meeting place for the local population. Visitors from all over the world are welcome.

Farming for health and nature
The farm grows various types of grain, potatoes and legumes. Strict criteria are adhered to right from the field work stage in order to meet the requirements of biodynamic farming. In addition to the natural areas, Tom focuses on mixed farming. Careful attention is paid to ensuring that the plants are suited to the region. Biodynamic agriculture promotes a wide variety of plants and insects, which significantly increases biodiversity.

Happy animals thanks to animal welfare
80 Montbéliarde calves, including 35 dairy cows, have found a species-appropriate habitat at Kass-Haff. This breed is particularly valued for the high quality of its milk. This milk is used to produce various types of cheese and yoghurt in the Biog cheese dairy. The calves are raised by their mothers, i.e. they are not separated from their mothers immediately after birth, but are suckled for a longer period of time.

Animal welfare is very important to the Kass family. Therefore, great importance is attached to the local adaptability of the animal breeds when selecting them. The pens are spacious. Daylight, bedding and fresh air are a must. Organic guidelines are of course adhered to and large natural areas (meadows) are also provided. Each animal species should be able to develop its own qualities to the fullest.

Over 400 free-range chickens supply the farm shop with fresh eggs every day. Horses, donkeys, pigs and goats complete the livestock. The animals mainly eat feed that is grown on the farm. This principle is another guarantee of the excellent quality of Kass-Haff meat products.

Visits and educational activities

Visitors are always welcome at Kass-Haff. Children, whether school classes or other groups, are given an insight into life on the farm. They get to know the animals and learn about nature in all its diversity. For example, they can feed animals, harvest potatoes, collect eggs or learn about life on the farm in a playful way. Where does milk come from, how is it processed into cheese, how many eggs does a hen lay, what is biodiversity? All these questions are answered on the farm.
