The biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variety of all living organisms, habitats and ecosystems – on land, in water and in the air. It is essential to human life, as it provides us with vital resources such as food and drinking water.

Biodiversity – also known as biological diversity – describes the variety of life on our planet. It includes three main aspects:

  • The diversity of ecosystems, or the range of habitats for different organisms.
  • The diversity of species, or the variety of organisms within an ecosystem.
  • The diversity of genes, or the genetic variation within a species or among all species in an ecosystem.

Preserving biodiversity is crucial for ensuring food security – that is, making sure everyone has access to high-quality food. Farmers play an important role in this, as the way they manage their farms must ensure that agriculture is sustainable and healthy ecosystems are maintained.

There are many different types of ecosystems, such as forests, lakes, streams, wetlands and meadows. All living things in an ecosystem have unique characteristics that enable them to survive in that specific habitat. They depend on one another, and their roles are closely interconnected. This interdependence is what keeps an ecosystem in balance.

For example, a meadow ecosystem involves a wide variety of plants, animals, fungi, lichens, bacteria and microorganisms. The plants in a meadow, such as grasses and flowers, form the foundation of this habitat. Through photosynthesis, they capture light energy with their leaves and produce oxygen and glucose. The glucose serves as the plant’s energy source. The pollen and nectar from the flowers provide food for flying insects such as bees and butterflies. These insects, in turn, are prey for dragonflies and hornets. Butterflies, bumblebees and bees pollinate plants and flowers, thereby helping them to reproduce. For their food, birds rely on insects such as spiders and beetles, which live on plant stems and on the meadow floor, as well as on earthworms, which they pull from the soil. A meadow is also home to creatures such as snails, slow worms, frogs, voles, field hamsters, rabbits and moles.

At the same time, it is inhabited by microorganisms like fungi and bacteria, which break down dead organic matter such as plant debris, animal carcasses and dead insects, releasing nutrients back into the soil for plants to use.

In an ecosystem, there are constant interactions and dependencies, and a change in one area – such as a decline in the insect population – can affect other parts of the habitat. This is why species diversity – the variety of plants and animals found in a specific area, such as a meadow – is so important.

A high diversity of species helps stabilise our entire ecosystem. The more diverse a habitat is, the less vulnerable it is to external influences such as climate change or environmental pollution.

Biodiversity also includes genetic diversity, which is essential for the ability of plants and animals to adapt to changing habitat conditions, environmental pressures or diseases – and thus for their long-term survival.
