Why visit a farm?

Farms offer a unique environment where children can learn about food, agriculture and sustainability with all their senses. Give your pupils the chance to experience farming first-hand and explore where our food actually comes from. There are plenty of good reasons to visit a working farm.

Keep the connection alive

Farming and food production are a major part of our daily lives – yet many children and young people today have no direct connection to them. Most of what they see and hear comes from second-hand sources, especially the media.

Farming and food production are recurring topics in the school curriculum and are covered in various age groups and subjects. But how many pupils have actually had the opportunity to visit a farm, harvest potatoes themselves or interact with animals in person? While farming can be taught in theory in the classroom, the practical aspect is often lacking.

The farm as a place to learn

A visit to a working farm offers a valuable opportunity to step outside the classroom into an alternative learning environment. There are countless ways to enrich classroom learning with topics related to farming and food production.

A farm visit gives children a transparent insight into the entire process – from the production of plant- and animal-based foods right through to the point of sale. Pupils receive information directly from the farmers themselves on site. This not only gives them a better understanding of the topic, but also creates a personal connection to farming that helps to ensure the learning experience stays with them.

A farm is the ideal place for schoolchildren to enjoy hands-on, real-world and unique experiences while developing new skills. That’s why the motto of our project is: “Landwirtschaft erliewen” – experiencing farming.
