What is “Fro de Bauer”?
The “Landwirtschaft erliewen” project aims to give children an interactive and hands-on introduction to agriculture as part of their everyday school routine. A key element of the overall project is “Fro de Bauer” (Ask the farmer), a specially developed sub-project for cycle 4 primary school classes that runs over the course of three terms.
To raise awareness of agriculture from an early age and teach the topic in a hands-on way, specially trained professionals visit the classes and support them throughout the school year. The Fro de Bauer concept combines both theoretical and practical elements – with a visit to a working farm as the main highlight.
1st term: Introduction to the world of agriculture
The project begins with the question: Do you know any farmers? A great icebreaker to explore the pupils’ existing knowledge and ideas. The results are captured in a mind map to highlight the diversity of agriculture.
After this initial introduction, the next part of the programme involves creating a seasonal calendar together.
This calendar is then updated throughout the year using stickers for different types of fruit and vegetables, which helps the pupils develop an awareness of seasonal and regional produce. Many children today have little idea of when certain fruits ripen in our region. During a farm visit, they can learn this in a fun and interactive way that encourages a more conscious approach to our environment.
The project then goes on to cover topics such as dairy cows and milk production, as well as suckler cows and meat production. The children gain an insight into the animals’ living conditions and the production process.
2nd term: Further exploration and critical thinking
In the second term, the children receive their own activity booklet, which explains key aspects of agriculture in Luxembourg. They are free to choose which topics they want to explore first. Socially relevant issues – such as types of chicken housing, the meaning of egg codes or how meat prices are determined – are also discussed in an open, honest and age-appropriate way.
Between terms, the children are given small tasks to complete either independently or with the help of school staff. The aim is to build on the topics covered in class and explore them in more depth. At the end of the booklet, there is a simple guide to growing vegetables in the classroom – an optional activity for teachers to make the topic even more tangible. The class can also put forward their preferences for which farm they would like to visit in the final term.
3rd term: Experiencing agriculture first-hand
The highlight of the project is a visit to a farm in the region. The school only has to arrange the transport – we take care of the rest. The visit, which lasts around two hours, offers an authentic insight into modern farming and gives the children an opportunity to experience agriculture with all their senses. It is important to us that the pupils are encouraged to form their own opinions – free from prejudice or outside influence.
The aim is to foster a lasting understanding of the connection between agricultural production and conscious eating.

Participation in “Fro de Bauer” as part of the “Landwirtschaft erliewen” programme is open exclusively to cycle 4 primary school classes. Registration is via the form provided further down on this page.
