Are you thinking about opening your farm to schools but are not sure if this kind of commitment is right for you? Here you will find the basic requirements and a checklist.
Experiencing agriculture first-hand
The aim of “Landwirtschaft erliewen” is to give children and young people a direct, first-hand experience of real farming and food production. Any farm in Luxembourg can take part in the project.
It all depends on your personal motivation. If you enjoy sharing insights into your work and explaining to children where our food comes from and how it is produced, then you already meet the most important requirement. No one is expecting you to take on the role of a teacher. Your job is simply to introduce your activities, create hands-on experiences and answer any questions.
Farm requirements
If you are opening up your farm to visitors, it is important that the premises are clean and tidy, and that any potential hazards are properly secured. More on this can be found under “Safety measures and rules on the farm”.
Children must have access to a toilet during the visit. In case of bad weather, it can be helpful to provide a barn or similar shelter for the visitors. No additional rooms or facilities are required on the farm. The field, the barn or the cowshed becomes the learning environment in place of a traditional classroom.
Introduction to the basics
All participating farmers must attend a half-day introductory training session. This training, which primarily consists of an introduction and guidance on good practices, is offered each year in different regions and takes place on a farm. An optional four-hour practical session is also available. Qualified farm educators may be exempt from this introductory training.

Is it right for me?
To take part in the “Landwirtschaft erliewen” project, your farm must be an actively managed full- or part-time business with a valid registration number (SER).
Before hosting school classes on your farm, you should take a moment to address a few basic questions. We have put together a checklist covering the key points. This can be found on page 5 of the guide.

If you have decided to take part in the project, you can register here. A farm profile will be created during this process and will be published on this website in the “Participating farms” section after your application has been approved.
